Blogger runs on Apache Tomcat 4.1.24

I accidently discovered that fokes at Blogger.com use Apache Tomcat 4.1.24. I was glad to know that Google's Blogger.com is a Java/J2EE web application.

But why use a low performing web server like tomcat on such a high performance demanding website ? There manny commercial application servers like BEA's weblogic or IBM's websphere. Tomcat is not even a fully qualified application server.

This is how I came across it. Hit the spell check option when you are composing a blog entry. For an instance you will see a blue-white screen, this is how it looks like:

It is a standard default blue-error 'error screen' you get on a tomcat web-server. It says 'HTTP status 404 Not found'. A little more digging in it I came to know that they use 'JSpell Spell Checker' of 'The Solution Cafe Inc.'

Its time they move to a better high performing Application Server. Anyways if they still want to stick with free open source Tomcat, atleast they can migrate to a latest version. The latest version as of now is 5.5.X which needs a J2SDK 1.5 or a compatibility pack if you wish to run it with J2SDK 1.4
