I accidently discovered that fokes at Blogger.com use Apache Tomcat 4.1.24. I was glad to know that Google's Blogger.com is a Java/J2EE web application.
But why use a low performing web server like tomcat on such a high performance demanding website ? There manny commercial application servers like BEA's weblogic or IBM's websphere. Tomcat is not even a fully qualified application server.
This is how I came across it. Hit the spell check option when you are composing a blog entry. For an instance you will see a blue-white screen, this is how it looks like:
It is a standard default blue-error 'error screen' you get on a tomcat web-server. It says 'HTTP status 404 Not found'. A little more digging in it I came to know that they use 'JSpell Spell Checker' of 'The Solution Cafe Inc.'
Its time they move to a better high performing Application Server. Anyways if they still want to stick with free open source Tomcat, atleast they can migrate to a latest version. The latest version as of now is 5.5.X which needs a J2SDK 1.5 or a compatibility pack if you wish to run it with J2SDK 1.4
When you explore the google map at its official site http://maps.google.com, and discover some interesting landmark or place you wish you could 'store' OR 'mark' it somehow for later reference, you find there is now way to do so.
Although the Google Maps Api has a concept of markers, the official maps because of their 'public' nature do not have any provision for marking or saving places on map.
In such scenarios you can obtain the exact co-ordinates (latitude and longitude) of the place and then use them to come back later to the same place without having to scroll and search the map much.
So how do you get the co-ordinates (latitude and longitude) of a place on the map ?
Well, this is easy. Follow this simple steps:
1. Double Click on the desired place. This will cause the map to center around the double-clicked place.
2. Right Click the 'Link to this page' link on the map and save the URL. This is how it looks like:
4. Notice the part of URL with 'll' (over here its ll=18.952727,72.815409). 'll' stands for Lattitude-Longitude.
the first number (over here 18.952727) is Lattitude,
and the second number (over here 72.815409) is Longitude.
Besides the 't' in the URl stands for map type.
if 't is missing' then map type is Map. (default)
if 't=k' then map type is Satellite. (over here its t=k)
if 't=h' then map type is Hybrid.
Ever wanted to send email to someone from Somebody Else's Email Account !
Thats exactly what you can do if you use 'Annonymous Email Sender'
You can choose the sender's email address to be something like 'annonymous@annonymous.com' or write ANYBODY's email address. Sounds fun ? give it a try and surprise your friends by sending them email from somebody's email account.
No signup or login required. Just type your message, fill in sender and recpient email address and hit the send button.
I made this application to show that emails are not secure means of communication. This application uses JavaMail Api and an internal email Server to relay emails. SMIME protocol or digital signatures should be used for exchanging secure emails.
Note: I have removed this page as its illegal to send anonymous emails.
Forget the weather forecasts for they are never trustworthy. Now you can predict the weather on your own by looking at different weather maps provided by Metro-logical Department of India.
Weather maps are in four categories:
1. Color composite
2. Infra red
3. Visual
4. Water vapor
Further each category will have two maps - Sector and Globe
To send sms freely, you have know the operator and the area of the service. Then, open your webmail like Gmail, Yahoo, or Rediff and send email to the MobileNo@OperatorWebsite.com and the mobile user receives it as a normal SMS, but "from" will show your email address rather than mobile number. I use Aritel AP and the messages are delivered instantly like the normal SMS. If you have to send message to an Airtel Mobile in AP just send email to MobileNo@airtelap.com.

I have made Local Yellow pages of suburbs in Mumbai City using Google Maps API and Google Local Search API.
Use the drop-downs to select any place in Mumbai and specify your search criteria like schools, colleges, hospitals, hotels, restaurants, tourist places, shopping malls, theaters and much much more.
It has useful, daily updated information of 62 suburbs of Mumbai
For each of the above mentioned place, you can find information on more than 70 search criteria like:
We had gone to Matheran, a hill station near Mumbai this week end. It is a famous weekend picnic place for mumbaikars who want a break from their daily routines. It is the only so called 'pedestrian tourist destination' in the world since no vehicles are allowed there to maintain its ecological beauty.
It is famous for its 'Mini train' which is a narrow gauge train ferrying tourists from Neral railway station to the hill station above. However now it is a thing of the past. The tracks were badly damamged in a landslide and are in a very bad shape. It seems it will take years to get the 'Mini Train' running again.
Now either you take a taxi to reach above or do something adventurous like 'track your way up on foot'. Ofcourse we choose the second option, it was tiresome but it was great fun. Its advisable to track at night when the weather is cool and pleasant.
SEEPZ stands for 'Santacruz Electronics Export Processing Zone'. It is the silicon valley of Mumbai city where all the biggies of Indian IT industry are situated. This is also where my office is situated.
After making Google Maps for 'Vasai' and 'Western Railway' (see previous blog posts), making a Google Map for SEEPZ was a breeze.
Here is the link of Local Yellow Pages of SEEPZ with Google Maps, Driving directions, Classifieds, Address, Phone and Fax numbers. It has details of schools, colleges, local businesses, cool hang out places, restaurants, hotels and much much more in and around SEEPZ.
Western Railway is a busy railway line which carries a record number of commuters who travel daily from their home in suburbs to their offices in the city and back. I travel daily in these trains with hundreds of other commuters.
So I thought why not make a google map of 'Mumbai City's Western Railway Line'. I believe this is the ONE and ONLY Google Map of Western railway ! (till date)
The XML based modular approach of Google Maps API makes it easy to replicate customized maps. All 'markers' can be added from an external XML file. I tweaked it a little to add descriptions also from the XML file.
Hence it was easy to make this one after I made one for my hometown (see previous blog post). The only difficult part is to get exact co-ordinates for which I use geo-locator websites, other mapping websites, Google Maps itself, Google Earth etc ....
Just roll-over the links and you get the description in a overhead pop-up-like box.

Update : I have updated the maps to use Google Maps API ver 2.5, Now they have High resolution satellite images and they open in new window with full screen size.
I was playing around with Google Maps API and thought why not make a 'Google map' for my hometown 'Vasai'.
Vasai is a Suburban Town in the outskirts of Mumbai City. Vasai is located, 55 km north from city of Mumbai on the western Indian coast facing Arabian Sea, at approximately (19°20'N - 72°49'E) or about 77 km along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National highway (NH No.8).
Vasai once encompassed India's most powerful and prosperous colonial settlement. The most significant past in Vasai's history is the rein of the Portuguese, since they largely influenced or changed to what Vasai is today. Vasai is a well-known Tourist destination because of its glorious past and a historically important fort called 'Bassein Fort'.
Vasai (Bassein as it was called during that time) has a rich past. Due its strategic geographical location it witnessed many wars and fell into many hands such as Portuguese, Marathas and finally the British. The historically important 'Treaty of Bassein' led to the foundation of 200 year long rule of Britishers in India.
Here is the link of Local Yellow Pages of Vasai with Google Maps, Driving directions, Classifieds, Address, Phone and Fax numbers. It has details of schools, colleges, local businesses, cool hang out places, restaurants, hotels and much much more in Vasai.
